The “Mariner’s Cross“, also referred to as the “Anchored Cross” or “St. Clement’s Cross” for the patron saint of sailors, many of whom wear the cross to protect themselves from the dangers at sea. The different variations of the Mariners cross have vast and broad meaning to individuals who’ve adorn them for centuries. The Anchored Cross is also worn as a talisman by sailors of many navies and fishermen who believe that wearing that it will protect them from harm until they return safely to port. It’s a popular symbol for jewelry and it’s also used in heraldry, featured on the flags and the coats of arms of several countries including Sweden, Leon, Spain, and Tallinn, Estonia.
The Saint Christopher Mariner Cross incorporates the designs attributes of the “St. Clement’s Cross” with a twist to represent the Saint Christopher the Patron Saint of Safe Travel and Passage.
Legend has it that Christopher used to be known as Reprobus. In the story, he was a giant Canaanite who sought to serve the greatest king. In his search, Christopher ended up serving the devil. But then one day, he noticed that the devil feared Christ, so he sought him out. St. Christopher then met a hermit who instructed him on the Christian faith and figured out how best to serve Christ. Because of His towering height, he decided he would assist people in crossing the river. This is how he became the patron saint for travelers.
After Christopher had performed this service for some time, a little child asked him to take him across the river. During the crossing, the river became swollen and the child seemed as heavy as lead, so much that Christopher could scarcely carry him and found himself in great difficulty. When he finally reached the other side, he said to the child: "You have put me in the greatest danger. I do not think the whole world could have been as heavy on my shoulders as you were." The child replied: "You had on your shoulders not only the whole world but Him who made it. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work." The child then vanished.
While a large number of mean and women who wear the Anchored Cross are unaware of its origin and symbolism, they continue to be worn in various ways representing seamanship and adoration for the sea. Mariner’s Cross jewelry remains an important symbol of hope, new beginnings, rebirth, and security for Mariners worldwide, as well a spiritual representation of such to Catholics and Christians. Like all symbols, the true meaning lays with that individual in you… what it means to you is what matter most and our intent is the capture the essence of the symbolic meaning and create a unique form for you carry with you throughout your earthly journey on land and sea.
